This Sea

One two one two
One toe in this water
but I fear I cannot remember
-- what beings brush against my skin:
jellyfish that come to sting
Or harmless nameless creatures wondering
What a foot is
-- What things I may bother and stir from slumber
            that may surface from underneath
Will I rouse them and make them
drag with them waves
That break into teeth,
unfold a hundred mouths in welcoming grin
As I begin to
Walk into --
One    two    one
two feet in this water
I wonder
-- What moon pulls these tides
that may just pull me under
and devour me dreaming and unthinking.
How was it again
to breathe awake beneath the depths?
Yes, remind me.
I once was of this sea.
Bring me to retrieve
the memory I left with whales,
the wings now born by stingrays.
